Buffalo Ghee Nutrition: What Our NABL Lab Report Actually Shows

Most ghee brands say "lab tested" and leave it there. It is a phrase that sounds like a guarantee and, on its own, means very little — a laboratory can test for almost anything, and what was tested is the part that matters.

So here is our buffalo ghee report in full, including what it does not cover.

The numbers, per 100 g

  • Energy: 897.66 kcal
  • Total fat: 99.74 g
  • Carbohydrate: less than 1.0 g
  • Protein: less than 0.1 g

Two things are worth drawing out of that.

It is essentially pure milk fat. 99.74 g of fat per 100 g leaves almost nothing else. The carbohydrate and protein readings are at the floor of what the method detects, which is what you would expect when the milk solids and water have been cooked out properly.

Nobody eats 100 g of ghee. A normal serving is 5–10 g, so the per-serving numbers are roughly a tenth to a twentieth of the figures above. The percentages you see on ghee labels look alarming for exactly this reason — they are calculated against 100 g.

How it compares to our cow ghee

Tested on the same day by the same laboratory, our desi cow ghee came back at 897.75 kcal and 99.75 g of fat per 100 g — report EQNX:001:NL:26:04:01549.

In other words, on energy and fat the two are indistinguishable. Anyone telling you buffalo ghee is dramatically lighter or heavier in calorie terms is not working from a report. The real differences between the two are colour, density and how they behave in cooking, not energy content.

What this report does not tell you

This is a nutritional composition report. It confirms what the ghee is made of by proportion. It is not an adulteration panel — it does not test for vanaspati, foreign fats, or added colour.

We are saying this plainly because the distinction gets blurred constantly in this category. A brand can hold a nutrition-only report and describe itself as "NABL lab tested" without lying, while leaving you to assume purity was tested. It was not.

FSSAI purity and adulteration testing for our ghee is scheduled for the next batch, and we will publish it in full when it exists — not before.

What we have already tested for purity

Our other products are further along, and those reports do cover adulteration:

  • Mustard oil — argemone oil negative, hexane residue under 1.0 mg/kg against an FSSAI limit of 5.0. Argemone is the most common toxic adulterant in Indian mustard oil.
  • Wild forest honey — HMF under 1.0 mg/kg against a limit of 80, confirming it was never heated, and added sugar under 1.0 g per 100 g.
  • Jaggery — total sugar 94.15%, moisture 4.11%, natural iron 3.36 mg per 100 g.

How to verify any of this yourself

Every NABL report carries a ULR number registered on the government portal. Take the ULR above, go to the NABL portal, and check it. You do not need to contact us, and you should not have to trust us.
