5 Litre Ghee Dolchi: Price, 5 L vs 5 kg, and Is Buying Desi Ghee in Bulk Worth It?

Chahal Agri Farms 5 litre desi cow ghee dolchi: front label, nutrition facts and bilona process label

If your family goes through a jar of ghee every couple of weeks, you have probably searched for a 5 litre ghee pack at some point: "ghee 5 kg", "5 litre ghee price", "5 ltr desi ghee". In most Indian homes the big container has a name of its own: the ghee dolchi, the steel can with a handle and a lid that sits in the corner of the rasoi.

This guide answers the questions people actually ask before buying one: what 5 litres of ghee costs, whether 5 litre and 5 kg are the same thing, how long a dolchi lasts, and when buying in bulk is worth it.

Any order above ₹3,500 gets ₹400 off automatically at checkout, so a cow ghee dolchi comes to ₹9,999 and a buffalo ghee dolchi to ₹8,699. No code needed.

Is 5 litre ghee the same as 5 kg?

No, and this is the most common mix-up when comparing prices. Ghee is lighter than water. One litre of ghee weighs roughly 910 grams, so:

  • 5 litres of ghee ≈ 4.5 kg
  • 5 kg of ghee ≈ 5.5 litres
  • A 15 kg tin ≈ 16.5 litres

When one brand quotes a price per kg and another per litre, convert before you compare. Otherwise the litre pack looks about 10% more expensive than it really is. Our label prints both. The cow ghee dolchi reads 5 Ltr / 4.52 kg.

How much do you save by buying 5 litres?

Here is what the same 5 litres costs if you buy it in smaller jars instead:

If you buy 5 litres as… Desi cow ghee Buffalo ghee
20 × 250 ml jars ₹11,980 ₹10,580
10 × 500 ml jars ₹10,990 ₹9,790
5 × 1 litre jars ₹10,745 ₹9,495
1 × 5 litre dolchi ₹10,399 ₹9,099

Compared with 500 ml jars, the dolchi saves you ₹591 on cow ghee and ₹691 on buffalo ghee, before the ₹400 checkout discount. You also make one order and receive one delivery instead of several.

Why our 5 litre ghee costs more than a 5 kg or 15 kg tin

If you search "5kg ghee price" or "desi ghee 15 kg tin price", you will find packs for much less than ours. That is not because they are better value per kg. They are a different product.

Most of the big tins in those results come from large dairies that make ghee from separated cream in industrial batches. Our ghee is made the bilona way: milk is set into curd, the curd is hand-churned into makhan, and the makhan is slow-cooked in an earthen pot. It takes roughly 25 litres of milk to make one litre of bilona ghee, so a single 5 litre dolchi represents around 125 litres of milk, churned and cooked by hand in Singhpur Sani, Sambhal.

How long does a 5 litre dolchi last?

It depends on how your family cooks. A teaspoon of ghee is about 5 grams, so roughly:

Household Ghee per day One 5 litre dolchi lasts
Small family, ghee on roti and dal ~20 g about 7 months
Family of four, ghee daily in cooking ~40 g about 3½–4 months
Joint family, or regular mithai and halwa ~75 g about 2 months

If your household finishes a 1 litre jar within a month, a dolchi makes sense. If a jar lasts you two months or more, stay with 1 litre jars so the ghee is always fresh.

Who should buy ghee in a dolchi

  • Families who use ghee every day, especially joint families.
  • Festival cooking. Diwali mithai, ladoo and halwa use a lot of ghee in a short time. Buffalo ghee is the traditional choice for sweets because it is thicker and creamier.
  • Pooja, havan and diya for homes and small temples that light lamps daily.
  • Two households sharing one order. Split a dolchi with family nearby and both of you pay the bulk price.

Cow or buffalo: which to buy in 5 litres?

Desi cow ghee is golden, granular and lighter. It is the everyday ghee for roti, dal and khichdi, and the one most families pick for children and elders. Buffalo ghee is white to pale cream, denser and richer, and it costs less per litre, which makes it the value choice for heavy cooking and sweets. How to store a 5 litre ghee dolchi

  • Snap the lid shut. Our dolchi has a clip-lock lid with a rubber seal. Close both clips after every use so air and moisture stay out.
  • No fridge needed. Keep the dolchi closed, in a cool, dry place away from the stove and direct sunlight.
  • Always use a dry, clean spoon. Water or food crumbs are what spoil ghee, not time.
  • Decant a small jar for daily use and refill it every week or two, so the big dolchi is opened rarely.
  • Texture changes with the weather. Ghee turns solid and grainy in winter and soft in summer. Both are normal.
  • Best before 12 months from manufacture, as printed on the label with the exact dates. Once the dolchi is empty, wash it and keep it. It makes a good atta or rice can.
